The Study of Menisci Effect on Tibio-femoral Kinematics in a Computational Knee Joint
نویسندگان
چکیده
The menisci are important knee structures that are often ignored in computational models of the knee. Previous work on this project has shown that representation of the menisci significantly reduces the contact forces and pressures on the articulating surfaces of the tibia and femur [1]. The purpose of this study was to examine the significance of the menisci on tibio-femoral kinematics. Improvements were made to a previously developed multi-body model of the meniscus by dividing meniscus geometries into smaller pieces in the circumferential direction. The effects of the menisci on knee kinematics were then examined by inserting the menisci models into a validated dynamic 3-D computational model of a knee loaded in a dynamic knee simulator (Kansas Knee Simulator, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS). The predicted tibiafemur kinematics of the knee model with (w) menisci and without (wo) menisci were compared to experimental data during simulated squat and walking profiles.

A new in vivo technique for determination of 3D kinematics and contact areas of the patello-femoral and tibio-femoral joint.
Patello-femoral disorders are often caused by changes of patello-femoral and/or tibio-femoral kinematics. However, until now there has been no quantitative in vivo technique, that is able to obtain 3D kinematics and contact areas of all knee compartments simultaneously on a non-invasive basis. The aim of this study was therefore to develop and apply a technique which allows for determination of...
متن کاملSimulation of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency in a Musculoskeletal Model with Anatomical Knees
Abnormal knee kinematics and meniscus injury resulting from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency are often implicated in joint degeneration even though changes in tibio-femoral contact location after injury are small, typically only a few millimeters. Ligament reconstruction surgery does not significantly reduce the incidence of early onset osteoarthritis. Increased knowledge of knee con...
متن کاملIndividual muscle contributions to the axial knee joint contact force during normal walking.
Muscles are significant contributors to the high joint forces developed in the knee during human walking. Not only do muscles contribute to the knee joint forces by acting to compress the joint, but they also develop joint forces indirectly through their contributions to the ground reaction forces via dynamic coupling. Thus, muscles can have significant contributions to forces at joints they do...
متن کاملIn-vivo Knee Kinematics after Total Joint Arthroplasty. a Novel Fluoroscopy-based Technique for Tracking Patellar Motion
Total knee arthroplasty is an effective surgical treatment, although patients do not recover completely normal lower limb joint kinematics and kinetics, and normal muscle activity in daily living activities at the operated knee. Whereas the tibio-femoral joint has been largely exploited in the past using several methodologies, the patello-femoral joint, which plays a fundamental role in the ext...
متن کاملPatellar Tendon Angle as an Indicator of Function in Total Knee Athroplasty
Patello-Femoral Angle (PFA) has been measured in several different techniques to assess patello-femoral joint function as a possible indicator of tibio-femoral antero-posterior translation and anterior knee pain [3,2,4] in patients operated on Total Knee Arthroplasty. The inclination of the patellar tendon in the tibial sagittal plane during knee flexion is important because it can reflect the ...
